Biz Herman is a freelance photojournalist, researcher, and writer based between New York City and San Francisco. She is a Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science at UC Berkeley, where her dissertation research focuses on how trauma impacts intergroup relations and political participation.
She recently pitched and co-photographed The Women of the 116th Congress for The New York Times, which included portraits of 130 out of 131 women members of Congress, shot in the style of historical portrait paintings. The story ran in print as a special section featuring 27 different covers, each with a local member of Congress based on where the paper was distributed. See tearsheets of the full special section here.
